Can You Change The Destiny Of A Nation?

CAN YOU CHANGE THE DESTINY OF A NATION?

 Index

Our Sunday evening services were popular with the youth. Some older, mostly single folks also attended. I loved our evening services, especially when our pastor, Costa Mitchell was teaching.

On one of those Sunday nights, Costa asked us to raise our hands if we believed we would go to heaven when we died. Like a good church, most people raised their hands. Then he posed another question: “Who of you believe you can change the destiny of a nation?” I looked around and saw that not one person raised their hand. Costa began to tell us how an individual's actions can impact a chain of events that may lead thousands to the Lord. That story changed my life forever. Although I can’t always recall the details, I always make it a point to share them with others. I will never again underestimate what God can do through us simple folk.

The story begins with Edward Kimball, a passionate young Sunday School teacher. He loved evangelism. He led Dwight L. Moody to Christ. D.L. Moody went on to preach to over 100 million people and led about 1 million to Christ.

Moody shared a story about evangelist Edward Kimball which in turn inspired F.B. Meyer to be an evangelist. Meyer influenced Evan Roberts and sparked the beginnings of the Welsh revival. Meyer wrote over 75 books. On one of his evangelism trips to America, he encouraged J. Wilbur Chapman to follow God's calling on his life. Chapman became an evangelist and led revivals in several cities. He preached 50,000 sermons to 60 million people and led tens of thousands to Christ.

Chapman inspired Billy Sunday, leading him to become an evangelist. Sunday held over 300 revivals, attended by about 100 million people. He led more than 1.2 million to Christ.

Billy Sunday inspired a group of men to reach their city. They invited Mordecai Ham to hold evangelistic meetings in Charlotte, North Carolina. A local farmer used his pick-up truck to bring neighbours to the meetings. One was Billy Graham, who gave his life to Christ on the last night. Over 30 years, Ham led 300,000 people to Christ.
Billy Graham preached to over 215 million people. About 3.2 million responded to Christ.

I remember my aunt taking my mom and me to a Billy Graham event. I saw a huge crowd moving to the front of the stadium to respond to the Gospel.
The story shows that it starts with one person. They must do the small thing that God called them to do. They all had one thing in common: they knew deep down who is the servant, and who is the King.

As Christians, we often judge our worth by our witness. It's based on how many we've led to Christ or healed by laying hands on them. It’s all about me, me, me. But it’s never about me; it is always about the King. In God's Kingdom, the Kids Worker on a Sunday holds equal value to the pastor or the worship leader. You never know who you are greeting at the door on a Sunday.

Be at home with who you are and enjoy what you do, always remembering that you are merely a servant. We wouldn't apply for a junior admin job and expect to be promoted to Managing Director.

I have shared before about the individual who called Derek back in Canada and gave him the address of a church. The Lord will reveal to him one day the significant impact that he had on many people in my home group. I reflect on what God has done through Hendrik and me. They were simple actions, but they profoundly impacted many lives.

Being naturally supernatural means that we can transform people’s lives without even realising it. We may share a word, thought or conversation that we don’t even remember. But for that person it is life giving. Hold on to it lightly. Don’t overthink it. Your message is not about you; it’s all about your Master.

Some people came into my life when I needed what they had to offer, and so it is for all of us. The story is always about Jesus—about ministering to one or several people for Christ. Looking back, I see that I cannot take any credit for the outcome. I was one link in a beautiful tapestry of events. Never underestimate the power of God through the simple things you do for Him.
