TOZER

 Index

They had a little library of books, and they encouraged us to pick a book for reading in the times we were not in class. There was no Television on the Ranch, it was also before the days of social media or smart phones for that matter. The ages of the group ranged from eighteen to forty two (me). My room-mate was in her early thirties. After dinner, she spent most evenings with the young students, playing games and having fun.

But that was not what I wanted from my experience at the Ranch, and so I spent my nights alone reading. There were two families as well. One with three kids and the other with one child. They spent most of their time with their kids.

The book I chose was ‘The Pursuit of God’ by A.W. Tozer. This book changed my life, big time! I copied the part in the book that meant so much to me. Every time I read it, it stirs all kinds of emotions in me. Apologies for the archaic English.
THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING by A.W. Tozer

Lift up thine heart unto God with a weak stirring of love; and mean Himself, and none of His goods. And thereto, look thee loath to think on aught but God Himself. So that nought work in thy wit, nor in thy will, but only God Himself. This is the work of the soul that most pleaseth God.

Oh God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. Oh God the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing. I thirst to be made thirstier still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, so that I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, “Rise up my love, my fair one, and come away.” Then give me the grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long.

In Jesus name, Amen.
