GOODBYE TO AMERICA
On Sunday, Christine’s brother and his wife gave me a lift back to Anaheim. I felt sad saying goodbye to David and Christine. Will I ever see them again? (Oh Leonie, if only you knew—you’ll see them sooner than you think.)
It was great to see Kris and David Fulton again. I joined them at church that evening, where John Wimber was preaching from Exodus 33. He spoke about Moses meeting God face to face and pitching a tent to draw aside for a meeting with God.
John referred to the current outpouring of God’s Spirit in Toronto and how it was spreading. He said, “Leave the heavy stuff aside for now and let God refresh us. Pitch your tent and let it be a tent of worship, prayer, and God’s Word.” Overall, it was a good message for me as I prepared to return to South Africa, and also for the month ahead in England.
Kris makes the most delicious chocolate chip cookies—truly to die for! She asked if I would like her to bake me some to take with me. I thought about my month in England and how I might run out of food. The cookies sounded like an even better plan, so I replied, “Yes please!” Now, looking back thirty years later, I see they could have detained me at the airport and taken my cookies. But the Lord was travelling with me. My stash of cookies would play a rather interesting role in my journey through England.
On Tuesday morning, I was back on the plane, heading to England. I had my ideas about my future. Maybe, some scary and exciting things awaited me in England in June. Then, I'd return to my boring life back in South Africa in July. But perhaps, just maybe, renewal would break out there, and my burdens would become lighter. I’ve always wanted to travel, but a part of me wondered if this was it. Who knows?
Maybe God would use me to help plant a church in England, or maybe it was just my imagination running wild. The last thing I wanted to do was force things to happen. After all, I can't envision the possibility of planting a church without assistance. I had resigned myself to the idea that I would eventually join a team—a team with the vision to plant a church in Yeovil. Yes! I would go and help them.
